The UNB Varsity Reds pulled off their third shocker of 2012 and kept themselves in contention for the AUS playoffs by beating the nationally ranked St FX X-Men tonight 67-66 at the Richard Currie Centre in Fredericton.
Daniel Quirion made two foul shots with two seconds remaining to propel his team to victory in a see saw affair that gave the Reds two huge points in the standings to draw even with the Saint Mary's Huskies for sixth place.
Bol Kong hit a three pointer with four minutes left in the third quarter to give the X-Men a 41-34 lead before the Reds started to begin a slow and steady comeback that would see them finally draw even at 57-57 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter..
Jeremy Dunn and Quirion exchanged three pointers to tie the game at 60, and after a Terry Thomas jump shot gave St FX a 62-60 lead, Alex DesRoches hit a jumper, got fouled by Dunn, and converted the foul shot to give the Reds their first lead of the game at 63-62.
Michael Fosu extended the Reds lead to three points with ninety seconds to play before back to back baskets from Tyrell Vernon and Dunn gave the X-Men a 66-65 lead with seven seconds remaining.
Dunn fouled Quirion with two seconds left leading to the game winning foul shots, then stumbled after catching the ensuing inbounds pass and time officially ran out for the X-Men.
Quirion would finish with 23 points and Alex DesRoches added 16 and 10 rebounds to lead the Reds to their fifth win of the year. Dunn scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Thomas had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the X-Men who dropped to 9-4 and have now lost three of their last five games.
